Loaded Hot Dog

Here’s a fun fact about me (if you couldn’t tell by the type of recipes I post) I am not a big fan of fast/ junk food but a good hot dog is something I totally enjoy. My version of a loaded hot dog might pale in comparison to others because I’m also not a huge fan of having a “cacophony ” of ingredients in any given dish. I believe in choosing the right ingredients and creating the perfect balance to achieve optimum results. These loaded hot dogs are a great example of how discernment goes a long way in delivering the perfect results, even for something that is considered “junk food”.

Side note: Its the year 2021, the sausage manufacturers and the bun manufacturers can come to an agreement on how much buns or sausages should be sold in a pack!

Loaded Hot Dog

Ingredients

  • hot dog buns
  • sausages
  • 1 pack spicy corn chips
  • 1 large onion
  • 1/4 cup of ketchup
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp red chili flakes or cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cabbage
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp vinegar
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • mustard
  • salt & black pepper to taste

The Coleslaw

  1. Blanche your shredded cabbage by pouring boiling water over it then immediately shock it in icy cold water.
  2. Strain then add mayo, vinegar, sugar, salt and black pepper

The Chips

Crush the chips in the bag and set aside to use as a topping. I like the crunch and flavor of spicy corn chips on a hot dog.

The added texture and flavor of spicy chips takes these dogs to the next level

Preparing The Sausages

I like to use a paring knife to make diagonal cuts along the surface of the sausage for aesthetics.
Add a bit of oil to a pan then begin to fry the sausages
After one minute, add the onions and sauté for another minute or so.
Once the onions begin to get tender, add the ketchup.
Add the chili flakes or cayenne pepper for some heat.
Soy sauce is my secret ingredient here as it gives the sausages a kind of BBQ finish.
Continue to sauté until the onions are cooked and the sauce thickens.
Topping these bad boys with some of the crushed chips
Mustard is the perfect condiment to balance the “BBQ” sauce flavor.
Boom! Our loaded hot dogs are done and it’s time to dig in.

Feel free to add other condiments and toppings if you want to go overboard and get crazy with it, but honestly this is all you need. The bed of coleslaw adds a creaminess and tames some of the spiciness. Sautéed onions bring a different kind of sweet to the loaded hot dog that blends well with the savory soy sauce. The crushed chips add a lovely crunch to each bite and the mustard just ties it all together. The icing on the cake!
