an important feature of a good spot is consistency. when you know exactly what a restaurant offers, you’re good with it and they do it the same every time, include it on your go to list. if nothing else, kam wah has been consistent in their offering for years. the fried chicken there has always been a favorite and their unique pepper sauce is on the radar of pepper lovers.

so we were glad when Kendall from kam wah invited us to see what’s new at the spot.

first to greet the eye is the updated interior. pretty swanky. new menu boards an such.

but the bigger change was the inclusion of this. a food by the pound section. so now you can either buy your regular specials and portions, or you can explore the benefits of dining by the pound. guess which option we went with?

so usual scenario. starches one side…

meats and veggies nex side.

in more detail, fried rice. one option loaded and one plain.

must have the egg noodles in the line up too.

singapore noodles for variety.

white rice option if you want a blank canvas on which to build flavors.

getting down to de meat of the matter, there’s a nice variety of protein. ginger chicken for example.

that famous kam wah fried chicken. big with the flavor.

sweet and sour chicken. another favorite.

what is a chinese food buffet without chunky veg though? we don’t know what it is either, but we know what it’s not… this buffet.

this was actually a discovery. schezwan eggplant. a lot of good reviews about this one out there.

no introduction needed here though. we’re sure ’bout dat!

sweet and sour fish for the fish lovers.

another thing on the kam wah menu since rock of ages was a pebble is the butter fried chicken. boneless. good stuff.

shrimp for the seafood lovers.

far be it from us to promote drinking on the job, but a cold one at lunch time out the office never hurt nobody. so we were glad that kam wah still provides a beer or two for a quick lunch time unwind.

the real question is, does buying chinese food at $45 a pound make any sense? well let’s see. first, there is the convenience of it. outside of calling in advance and placing your order, you have to wait a while for your order to be prepared. the self serve option with ready portions is quicker than that. walk up, dish out, pay and leave. who doesn’t want to spend less of their lunch hour waiting for food? next there is the variety. for about the price of a large special, you can sample a little of everything so you don’t have to choose between your favorites or what yuh feelin for today. mix and match as yuh please without having to buy half or whole portions. added to that, you can create your own combinations that don’t exist on the menu. there is no singapore noodles, ginger chicken and schezwan eggplant combo on the menu, but this option lets you have it. it’s all your call. to enjoy these things with tasty kam wah food seems like a good option to us. we’ll be back.
